Tweed Shire Council is urging residents and businesses in Tweed Heads South and Banora Point to have their say on a draft strategy to reduce future flood risk.

The Tweed Heads South Levee and Drainage Study is on public exhibition until 26 October 2025, featuring updated flood mapping and a range of proposed mitigation measures.

The draft follows earlier catchment-wide studies and extensive consultation in 2023, when more than 230 locals shared flood experiences and records to help shape the modelling.

Council’s Flood and Stormwater Engineer, Leon McLean, said local knowledge had been critical.

“With the draft report complete, this is the community’s chance to review the strategy and ensure it reflects what works best locally,” he said.

Feedback from the first round revealed more than 80 per cent of participants had faced flooding, with stormwater drainage and levee overtopping the biggest concerns.

Many called for drainage upgrades, clearer flood risk information and tighter development controls.

The second stage of consultation will guide the final strategy, with residents in the study area set to receive information packs and surveys shortly to provide feedback.
