A woman is fighting for her life after being hit by a rollercoaster in a freak accident at the Melbourne Royal Show.

Police say initial investigations suggest the woman was struck by a rollercoaster carriage as she was trying to retrieve a dropped phone.

“It appears at this early stage the woman may have walked on and entered the track to try and retrieve a dropped phone before she was hit by a roller coast carriage,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

The horror incident unfolded in front of shocked onlookers about 5.45pm on Sunday.

The 26-year-old woman was found lying injured on the ground.

She was treated at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

The rollercoaster ride will be shut for the foreseeable future, however, the show is set to go on as investigations into the incident continue.
