The Queensland Government has released the first images of the proposed route for Stage 4 of the light rail from Tugun to Coolangatta.
It’s expected the trams will run down the eastern side of the Gold Coast Highway through Tugun and Bilinga, replacing the median strip that separates the highway from Golden Four Drive.

It will then cross the highway into the Gold Coast Airport precinct where a transport hub will be built to service the airport and the neighbouring Southern Cross University.
The tramline will then cross to Musgrave Street and onto Coolangatta Road before ending at the intersection of Chalk and Warner streets in front of Coolangatta Bowls Club, where a massive public plaza and transport hub will be built.

The proposed line means the Lanham Street Park, Coolangatta police station and Magistrates Court will all be replaced.
The major changes that will happen in Coolangatta will form a large part of community consultation, which runs from November 7 to November 25.

Gold Coast Airport bosses have welcomed the the proposed route.
The extension of the Gold Coast Light Rail south to Coolangatta, via Gold Coast Airport, is key to the city’s long-term connectivity, for visitors and locals,” Queensland Airports Limited Chief Executive Officer Amelia Evans said.
“Gold Coast Airport welcomes more than 6.5 million passengers annually and as travel demand rebounds, passenger movements are expected to increase significantly in future years.
“We have invested $500 million in the airport precinct, including the terminal expansion which is currently open for domestic passengers and opens for international passengers next month, in order to allow for this growth in traffic.

“Improved transport links to and from the airport are central to the ongoing success of our region.
“Gold Coast Airport has planned for the future introduction of light rail facilities, and we’ll continue to work closely with the Department of Transport and Main Roads on the delivery of Stage 4, and how this crucial infrastructure will integrate into the next Gold Coast Airport Master Plan.”
