A 12-year-old boy is fighting for his life in hospital after being bitten by a shark at a Sydney Harbour beach.
Emergency services were called to Nielsen Park in Vaucluse around 4.30pm on Sunday following reports of the boy being attacked near Shark Beach.
Police said the youngster was rescued from the water by officers from Marine Area Command within minutes of the call being made to triple zero.
“Water Police officers attached two medical tourniquets and was immediately given first aid on board the police vessel for serious leg injuries before being transported to Rose Bay wharf, where NSW Ambulance Paramedics continued first aid,” NSW Police said.
The boy was then rushed to the Children’s Hospital at Randwick in a critical condition.
Police said the boy’s injuries were consistent with what is believed to have been a large shark.
Swimmers are being advised to avoid entering nearby waters at this time.
