Another trapped whale rescued off the Gold Coast

Sea World crews have conducted their fourth rescue in four days, helping to free a whale entangled in fishing gear off the Gold Coast.

A spanner crab operator called Sea World Foundation on Tuesday morning after spotting a 7 metre whale stuck in their equipment just off Burleigh Heads.

The team were quick to arrive at the site and worked to free the animal in just 20 minutes.

“There was two pots attached to the whale as well as a bunch of rope,” Sea World Foundation Head of Marine Sciences, Wayne Phillips said.

“The rope was around the tail as well as through the mouth which made it a little bit tricky but the team did an amazing job.

“The whale was so compliant .. it laid beside the boat.

“We were able to get hold of that rope and unravel the rope out of its mouth and around the tail fluke.”

It’s now the fourth rescue for crews in four days after two other rescues off the Gold Coast and another off Byron Bay over the weekend.

“Four in four days is pretty amazing by the team,” Mr Phillips said.

“It’s great for the whales that they’ve all happened close by and we’ve been able to get to those animals and help them out.”

It’s now the 8th rescue in total since the 2026 annual migration began.
