A Gold Coast gymnasium has been shut down after its owner and teacher was charged with child sex offences.

Skybound Gymnastics owner Wei Jun Lee was arrested last week and extradited to New South Wales on Thursday.

He was later charged with intentionally sexually touching a child over 10 and under 16 years old.

New South Wales Police say an investigation was launched following allegations a 15-year-old boy had been sexually touched at a hotel in Rooty Hill in June.

Lee fronted court in Sydney last week and was refused bail to reappear on Monday.

In a statement, Gymnastics Australia and Gymnastics Queensland confirmed Skybound Gymnastics in Burleigh has been shut down.

“Gymnastics Australia and Gymnastics Queensland are aware of an active police investigation involving a coach who is also a club owner, and who has been arrested.

“This matter is being managed by the Police and we will not be providing further comment on the investigation.

“The safety and wellbeing of children and young people in our sport is our highest priority. Gymnastics in Australia has zero tolerance for any behaviour that places members or children at risk.

“Gymnastics Australia and Gymnastics Queensland acted immediately under the National Integrity Framework, suspending the coach as soon as we became aware of the arrest. Skybound Gymnastics will cease operations effective immediately.”

Queensland Police say detectives are now looking into whether any alleged offences may have occurred here.

“There were no allegations in relation to child sex offences in Queensland. But as a matter of procedure our detectives are now making inquiries to where he’s worked and the kids that he’s had contact with, their parents.,” Acting Chief Superintendent Peter Miles told the ABC.

“So those investigations have started. But I must stress that there’s been no allegations in Queensland. “
