The Gold Coast Suns have secured stars Christian Petracca and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan on the final day of the AFL Trade Period.
Petracca has been granted his wish to make a move to the Gold Coast after telling Melbourne he wanted to be traded.
The Suns were forced to cough up plenty for the four-time All-Australian, handing the Dees picks 7,8, and 37 for this year’s draft, plus next year’s first-round pick and their 2027 third-round pick.
In return, the Suns will receive picks 24 and 28 this year, as well as Melbourne’s second-round pick next year.
Petracca played 212 games for Melbourne after being drafted in 2014, and helped the Dees to their drought-breaking premiership in 2021.
Suns List Manager Craig Cameron says they are thrilled to welcome the 29-year-old to the Gold Coast
“One of our goals throughout the trade period was to add high quality, experienced players to our evolving list and Christian is a player that we think can really compliment the group we have,” Cameron said.
“Christian will add to our midfield group and has the ability to go forward, attributes we feel are an important addition to our squad as we look to take the next step on-field in 2026.”
The Suns have also handed Jamarra Ugle-Hagan a career lifeline, ending a troubled 12 months at the Western Bulldogs, which saw the 23-year-old sit out the whole season due to off-field issues.
The Bulldogs will receive pick 74 in return.
It’s understood the Suns have signed Ugle-Hagan on a short-term cut-price contract, believed to be around a quarter of what he was on at the Bulldogs.
Cameron says they believe Ugle-Hagan can play an important role at the club.
“As a football club we have a commitment to make sure we explore all options in an effort to give our club the best opportunity for success,” Cameron said.
“We firmly believe that a fit and healthy Jamara can help us as a football club. He is a player with high forward craft and IQ that can not only add, but complement the exciting group of forwards we already have.”
Ugle-Hagan posted a statement on social media, expressing his gratitude to his former club.
“From a shy 15-year-old who moved to Melbourne, the Doggies took me in and gave me a family and a home. For that, they’ll always hold a special place in my heart.
“Part of me wishes things had ended differently, but I leave proud to have worn the red, white, and blue.
“Thank you to all my teammates, coaches, and staff who’ve been part of my journey – I’m forever grateful.”
