Gold Coast public school teachers will join a statewide strike next week as they step up their pay dispute with the state government.

More than 95 per cent of union members across Queensland this week voted in favour of strike action.

They will walk out of the classroom for 24 hours on Wednesday.

It’s the first time in 16 years the state’s teachers have taken such drastic action.

Teachers have rejected the state government’s offer of a 3 per cent pay rise this year and a 2.5 per cent increase in the following three years.

The state government insists it remains open to further talks despite referring the matter to the industrial court for mediation.

The Education Department is assuring parents that schools will remain open during the strike action however, normal classes are expected to be disrupted.
