Gold Coast Health is urging locals to roll up their sleeves and get the free flu jab as winter approaches.
With over 1,000 confirmed flu cases already recorded on the Gold Coast this year, health officials are hoping to boost the current 13 per cent vaccination rate.
To help, Queensland has expanded its free program to include a “game-changing” needle-free nasal spray for children aged two to five.
By removing the fear of needles, health experts hope to see a significant spike in protection for families.
Gold Coast Health Public Health Medical Director, Dr Kate Alexander, warns that while case numbers haven’t spiked significantly yet, the window to act is closing.
“Flu strains change every year, and people’s immunity reduces over time,” Dr Alexander said.
She noted that a quick appointment now could prevent a week of misery at home or a stay in a hospital bed later this winter.
“Although we haven’t seen flu numbers significantly increase yet this season, now is the time to protect yourself ahead of winter, when the disease is more likely to spread,” she said.
“The flu vaccination is free and easily accessible. Taking 15 minutes out of the day to get vaccinated could prevent you from spending days or weeks at home sick, or worse, in a hospital bed.”
