There’s been a lucky escape for a driver on the Gold Coast after his car became stuck in rising floodwaters.

It happened along Hotham Creek Road in Willowvale around 12.30am as severe storms swept across the city.

The wild weather, which came with little to no warning, dumped around 80 millimetres of rain in some parts leading to flash flooding.

The heavy downpour caused the creek in Willowvale to burst its banks, with the driver getting caught up in the chaos as he tried to cross the road.

Thankfully the car was swept into the shoulder of the road and not into the creek, allowing him to safely get out and onto dry land.

He was then checked over by paramedics at the scene.
