A major emergency situation has been declared in Burleigh Heads after a fierce fire tore through a tyre shop, sending thick plumes of smoke billowing across the suburb.

Emergency crews were called to the West Burleigh Road business around 5.50pm on Monday, following multiple reports of a large blaze.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the store fully engulfed in flames.

The intensity of the inferno forced police to establish a large exclusion zone, cordoning off several surrounding streets.

The restricted area stretches from Burleigh Street to the north across to West Burleigh Road to West Street, Tabilban Street and across to Dunlin Drive up to Christine Avenue.

Residents and motorists are being urged to avoid the area as emergency crews work to contain the flames.
