Covert cameras will be deployed across the Gold Coast in a bid to put an end to illegal dumping.
A dedicated team of officers will crackdown on residents throwing out junk onto the streets, with cameras to be regularly relocated across the city.
Mayor Tom Tate says enough is enough, with illegal dumping costing ratepayers around $7 million annually.
“We won’t say where these cameras are but anyone planning on dumping rubbish, furniture, building materials, tyres or any other items is on notice: you will be caught and can be fined or prosecuted,’’ Mayor Tate says.
“The cameras can operate in extremely low light and record activities as well as vehicle registration numbers, to assist with investigations.”
The council has established a dedicated four-person team within the City’s Health and Regulatory Services branch, to investigate illegal dumping.
Surveillance will be conducted 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Since 2019, the city’s investigations have led to 384 fines being issued.
The fines for illegal dumping will set you back up to $2,300, with penalties increasing to $10,781 for offending businesses.
Mayor Tom Tate says there’s absolutely no excuse for residents trashing our city.
“Our tips are free, just get there. Do the right thing, have pride in your city because why illegally dump it?”
“It is a blight on our city and offenders can be fined or prosecuted.’’
Anyone spotted illegally dumping can be reported via the City’s Report a Problem App.
