The Tweed has received global recognition after being ranked as one of the world’s best travel destinations.
Lonely Planet has revealed its Best in Travel list for 2027, with the Tweed making the list as one of the 25 best places to visit.
It was the only Australian destination to be recognised on the list as a destination to go to.

“A place on Best in Travel is essentially Lonely Planet saying this destination is worth the plane ticket,” Zeiher said.
“And for hundreds of millions of people who haven’t decided where they’re travelling to next, that’s a really powerful recommendation.”
While the Tweed has often played second fiddle to the Gold Coast and Byron, Zeiher says the shire hasn’t gone unnoticed by many.
“There’s an incredible amount packed into the region. You’ve got outdoor adventure, fantastic food, you can cycle the Northern Rivers Rail Trail or spend a day or several days exploring the region on foot.
“The Tweed is one of those places that gives you plenty to do but gives you the permission to do absolutely nothing .”
Tweed Shire Mayor Reece Byrnes says the wonders of the region are something they already know.
“To be recognised by Lonely Planet as one of the world’s must-visit destinations is a wonderful honour for the Tweed and a proud moment for our community,” Councillor Byrne said.
“This recognition celebrates our spectacular natural landscapes, vibrant villages, rich culture and outstanding local businesses. “
