Brazen thieves have stolen a famous Gold Coast sign used to mark the border between Queensland and New South Wales.
Footage has emerged on social media of thieves using an angle grinder to cut off the City of Gold Coast sign in Coolangatta on Friday night.
Local Councillor Gail O’Neill has slammed those behind the theft.
“I think you’re a grub. I mean, everybody enjoys that sign. Why should you have it? It doesn’t belong to you. It’s theft, so you’re committing an illegal act,” Councillor O’Neill said
“Just give it back. Contact the Police. Leave it at my office, I don’t care. Just give it back.”
The iconic sign on Dixon St is actually a replica of the original boundary sign that had to be replaced about nine years ago because of damage and rust.
It’s not the first time it’s been targeted with the sign covered in graffiti earlier this year.

“I don’t know why people do what they do. I am at a loss to understand vandalism, I always have been. I just don’t get it. People just don’t want other people to enjoy things, but it is a sign. It’s an iconic sign,” Councillor O’Neill said.
Police have confirmed they are investigating with serious charges possible for those behind the theft.
“Obviously have the potential for stealing and wilful damage,”Acting Superintendent Michelle Piket said.
“I’ve seen …. and if you have time to pick up your phone and video that sort of stuff, I encourage you to actually give us a call and contact us and we can conduct our investigations.”
