A brand new training facility for plumbing students is now open at TAFE Queensland’s Ashmore campus.
The 4-storey Plumbing Tower has been specially designed with practical teaching areas that allows apprentices to cross train and multi skill in various plumbing streams and licensing electives.
Some of the features of the new tower include:
- Sanitary drainage stacks up to 3 storeys
- Drainage pit to simulate laying house drainage
- Fit off bays to provide hands on training and skill development to install several types of plumbing fixtures (toilets, taps, urinals, basins baths etc.)
- Rough in bays with welding benches so that students can train and develop hands on skills installing hot, cold tempered and recycled water pipes through walls and test them

Lead Vocational Teacher Stephen Brown told myGC the new tower has doubled the plumbing training capacity, and is a more useable and flexible space.
“Every single thing that a plumber gets to do, we can do in this building now,” he said.
“In plumbing, there is so many varied parts of the trade and lots of apprentices don’t get to do what we call a full scope of works. So we can actually demonstrate a full scope of works here, live, every single day.”
Apprentice Plumber Tim Macdonald said he is excited to train in the new tower.
“One of the great things about the new facility is all the new equipment. It simulates the work environment and is a great place to learn and it is really going to help me while studying to become a plumber,” he told myGC.
