The Gold Coast is in for some wild weather this weekend with strong winds whipping up rough seas.

Dangerous conditions have forced lifeguards to close a number of beaches in Main Beach, Surfers Paradise and Mermaid Beach.

South to southeasterly winds will reach up to 35 km/h today while wind gusts have already reached 41 km/h at the Seaway this morning.

The Bureau has also issued a wind warning for areas up and down the Queensland coast, including Gold Coast waters

The State Government removed shark nets from all Gold Coast beaches earlier this week in preparation for the wild conditions.

Swell is predicted to reach five metres across the weekend.
