A man has been arrested and charged by the Counter-Terrorism Investigation Group with allegedly planning a terrorist act on the Gold Coast on Australia Day.
The 24-year-old Brisbane man was taken into custody on Wednesday after police received a tip-off from a member of the public via Crime Stoppers.
The man fronted Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning charged with one count of other acts done in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts.
Police allege the man had been planning an Australia Day riot that would have involved the throwing of Molotov Cocktails, with the plans allegedly detailed in a Facebook group.
He applied for bail, but it was refused with the case adjourned to February 20.
In a statement, police said there were no known ongoing direct threats to the community.
“The Queensland Police Service reassures the community that there are no known ongoing direct threats to the community or any upcoming events at this time,” The statement said.
“It is not alleged that a specific group was the target of the alleged planned acts of violence.
“The safety and security of our communities remain the Service’s highest priority.
“The QPS continues to work in close collaboration with our federal and state counterparts to ensure the safety of all Queenslanders.”
