An investigation is underway into the cause of a massive car fire on the Gold Coast.

The vehicle erupted into flames on the second-storey car park of the Runaway Bay shopping centre around 2am on Saturday.

Fire crews rushed to the scene after receiving reports of thick black smoke billowing from the area.

Upon arrival, they found the car fully engulfed but they immediately leapt into action and were able to douse the flames within 15 minutes.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesperson confirmed they have now left the job in the hands of police.

Investigations are ongoing.
