A 17-year-old volunteer firefighter has been charged with lighting a series of bushfires in Sydney’s west.

The teenager allegedly started multiple fires in the Wallacia area between June and September 2025, before responding to each one of them in his role as a volunteer firefighter.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Financial Crimes Squad Arson Unit, with help from the Rural Fire Service, tracked a pattern of suspicious fires and identified the boy as a suspect.

The boy was arrested yesterday and charged with three counts of intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread and two counts of false representation resulting in police investigation.

The accused was refused bail and appeared before a children’s court later that day.

Investigations under Strike Force Tronto remain ongoing.
