A weekend fishing trip has ended in tragedy off the coast of far north Queensland after a man was fatally mauled by a shark.
The 39-year-old was spearfishing with mates out at Kennedy Shoal, which is about 40km off the Cassowray Coast, around midday on Sunday when he was attacked.
The man was pulled from the water after suffering a critical head injury but sadly could not be revived.
Detective Acting Inspector Elaine Burns said the man spent over an hour on board the group’s vessel following the attack.
“This is a tragic incident for everyone involved,” she said.
“We will continue to provide support to the family and those who were on board with him.”
Authorities believe the shark involved was a bull shark, with investigations ongoing.
