Workers at David Jones stores across Queensland, including Robina and Pacific Fair, are facing an anxious wait as the retail giant teeters on the brink of collapse.
Industry fears are mounting that the iconic department store could be plunged into voluntary administration as early as today.
The uncertainty follows revelations the company has fallen behind on rent across multiple Westfield locations nationwide.
Shoppers holding David Jones vouchers are being urgently advised to use them immediately amid growing fears the business could go under.
Gerard Dwyer from the SDA says the union remains hopeful a last-minute bailout can be secured to protect employees from being left high and dry before Christmas.
“It’s a really uncertain period, our members and stores are looking for some certainty, looking for some direction,” he said.
“We’re there advocating on their behalf to ensure accrued entitlements are preserved and lets hope that we can maximise the number of jobs that are saved.
“We’re urging those who are involved in negotiations to try and ensure that there is some bail out here, there is some form of David Jones that goes forward.
“We’d urge people to really focus on trying to save what is an iconic Australian business”.
