Queensland motorists caught breaking the law will now cop heftier fines.

From today, all State Government traffic fines are increasing by a default rate of 3.5 per cent.

It means drivers caught speeding up to 10kph over the limit will now cop a fine of $333, which is $11 more than the previous penalty.

While those snapped driving more than 40kph over the limit will have to fork out around $1,918, which is a hike of $65.

Meantime, anyone caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel, or not wearing a seatbelt, will now be slugged a whopping $1250, up from $1209.

Some populated tourist areas will also see the speed limit cut from 50km/h to 40km/h from July 1.

Queensland Police say the increase is in a bid to curb our growing road toll.

“Last year unfortunately we had 302 people that we lost on our Queensland roads, and that’s just way too many,” Superintendent Brett Jackson said.

“Those numbers have been increasing steadily over the last few years despite numerous attempts to reduce that road toll”.

“The message is – follow the road rules, pay attention when you’re driving and make sure you and your family get to your destination safely, especially over the school holidays when we see increased road usage,” Supt Jackson added.
