LATEST @ 4.30 PM | Police have confirmed a woman, who was believed to have gone missing in rough seas off the Tweed Coast, has been found safe.

A major land and sea search was launched earlier today after a member of the public reported they had witnessed someone in the water who was experiencing difficulty.

Tweed-Byron police said crews were searching for a woman with dark hair, wearing a beige one-piece swimsuit with a white surfboard.

“Witnesses reported to police the surfer appeared to be in trouble in the rough surf behind the Kingscliff bowling club at around 11am,” police said.

“Further reports were received that a female surfer was seen leaving the beach and police are trying to confirm if it is the same person.”

Following further inquiries, the woman was located safe and well in Kingscliff about 4.40pm.

“Police have been told the woman had gone for a swim this morning and had returned to shore safely,” police said.

EARLIER @ 12.30 PM | A frantic search is underway off Kingscliff Beach for a surfer who was reported to be in trouble.

According to Tweed-Byron Police, witnesses spotted the female surfer in rough surf behind the Kingscliff bowling club at around 11am.

She is being described as having dark hair, wearing a beige one piece bikini with a white surf board.

It’s understood a female surfer was seen leaving the beach later in the morning, with police now trying to confirm whether it is the same person.

In the meantime, NSW Police Marine Command, NSW Ambulance, Surf Life Saving NSW and other resources are continuing to search both the sea and land.
