The federal government has given the green light to Gold Coast Airport’s 20-year Master Plan as it prepares for a boost in traveller numbers over the coming years.

The plan involves the addition of a retail village, health and wellness hub and conference and tech centre.

It also hopes to become one of the country’s most well-connected airports with a plaza that would be able to service both light and heavy rail.

However, the future of transport options remains unclear, with a decision yet to be made on whether Light Rail Stage Four.

Gold Coast Airport is currently Australia’s sixth busiest, welcoming more than 6.2 million passengers each year and contributing $514 million to the local economy.

Passenger numbers are expected to soar to 13 million by 2044, which would pump $965 million into the city’s economy.

“We are a crucial value driver for the region and proudly play an important role in the economic vitality of southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales,” Queensland Airports Limited CEO Amelia Evans said.

“Receiving approval for the Master Plan marks an exciting step forward in delivering a future-focused precinct that generates significant health, employment and social outcomes for our surrounding communities.”

The Master Plan also includes additional airport hotel accommodation, enhanced car parking facilities and an expansion of Southern Cross University.

“Ensuring GCA’s connectivity and accessibility is vital for the success of both our airport and the regions we serve. It will also deliver an enduring legacy for the 2032 Games,” Queensland Airports Limited CEO Amelia Evans said.

“The mixed-use precinct will create a vibrant destination for people to work, relax, shop and connect. Our vision extends beyond being just an airport – we aim to be a destination in our own right.”
