Dark clouds, thunder and rain has started sweeping over the Gold Coast this afternoon as destructive thunderstorms batter southeast Queensland.

While the city hasn’t been included in any official warnings, residents are being urged to remain alert.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued multiple severe thunderstorm warnings for large parts of the state, with giant hail and destructive winds predicted to continue well into the evening.

“Strong heating of a moist airmass over southeastern and central Queensland east of a surface trough is creating unstable atmospheric conditions,” BOM said.

“This will combine with strong winds in the upper atmosphere to provide a favourable environment for the development of isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening”.

The most severe activity has been reported across the Darling Downs, Granite Belt, and Wide Bay regions, with hailstones as large as 9 centimetres smashing Pratten earlier this afternoon.

More than 3500 homes and businesses are also without power according to Energex, with majority of those in Milton, Paddington and Bowen Hills.

* Stay away from windows if there is giant hail.

* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.

* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
