A man is being questioned by Police after allegedly grabbing a young girl as she walked to school in Coolangatta.
The 12-year-old was walking along a path on Miles St just before 9am on Thursday when a man, who was not known to the girl, grabbed her around the shoulders.
The man released her a short time later, before the girl ran off.
Police were notified and launched patrols of the area.
A 21-year-old man was located in Coolangatta on Thursday afternoon.
He is assisting Police with inquiries.
The girl was not physically injured during the incident.
The Department of Education says it is aware of the incident.
“The school has engaged with the parents and student involved and continues to offer support,” the department said in a statement.
“Support will also be available to any other member of the school community who requires it.
“Communication is being sent to all parents and carers, encouraging them to remain vigilant and to reinforce safety and stranger awareness messages.”
