The 2026 Magic Millions Yearling Sale is off to a hot start on the Gold Coast, with more than $45 million splashed on horses on the opening day on Tuesday.

Organisers of the event are hoping for another big day when the sales continue this morning after one horse went under the hammer for a whopping $2 million.

The colt by champion international sire Frankel, who is regarded as one of the greatest British racehorses of all time, topped day one.

The colt attracted a flurry of bids when presented as Lot 59 and in the end it was Coolmore Stud’s Tom Magnier who held the bid when auctioneer Grant Burns brought down the gavel.

“He was one of the standouts,” Magnier said.

“”We’ve had a lot of luck with Segenhoe.”

“We’ve had a lot (more) of Frankels in the Northern Hemisphere than in the Southern Hemisphere so we know them well. We’ve had a lot of luck with the grand dam.”

“All the team really liked him. He’s a lovely fluid action horse and he ticks all the boxes.”

“We’ve bought him in a syndicate with Chris (Waller) so he’ll go straight in with him.”

“Fair play to Peter O’Brien and John Camilleri. They breed good horses and we’re just delighted to be a part of it. We’ve got a great syndicate.”

The second top seller on the day came late in the afternoon when the Extreme Choice colt from Dame Giselle sold for $1.2 million to Chris Waller and Guy Mulcaster.

He is the third foal of Dame Giselle, a four time Group Two winning I Am Invincible daughter of Ballet Society.

“We’re pretty happy with that colt,” Mulcaster said.

“He looked sharp and he’s got a beautiful family… We looked at him two days ago with Chris and he said they all run out of that family and that was good enough for me.”

“I thought we’d be hard enough to beat and we didn’t let on too much what we were up to, so we probably got him at the right odds.

“He looks a beautiful horse and let’s hope he’s back here next year.”

All up across the opening day, 145 lots sold for an average price of $284,724.

Day Two will commence at 10am this morning.
