A man has been charged over a shocking incident on the Gold Coast that saw a police horse and officer injured.
Police from the Mounted Unit were patrolling Surfers Paradise around 12.20am on Sunday when they stopped a red Ducati motorcycle on Elkhorn Avenue.
When officers attempted to speak with the rider while on horseback, police say he allegedly sped off, striking the two police horses in the process.
As a result, one of the officers was thrown from the horse, with both the officer and horse suffering minor injuries.
The rider of the motorbike, a 40-year-old Southport man, was taken into custody at the scene.
He has since been charged with two counts of unlawfully killing or injuring a police horse, one count of driving without due care and attention, and one count of drive under the influence.
He is due to appear before Southport Magistrates Court 22 February.
