More than 3,600 cyclists have powered their way from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, raising an estimated $700,000 for cancer research in one of Queensland’s biggest charity rides.
Riders set off from South Brisbane around 5.45am on Sunday, taking on the gruelling 100-kilometre course to Fisherman’s Lawn at the Broadwater.
The mammoth ride included champion cyclists, amateur riders, cancer survivors and supporters, all united by the same goal of fighting cancer.
Among those leading the field were Australian cycling legend and former Commonwealth Games champion Kate Bates and Brisbane Broncos great Corey Oates, as riders travelled through Brisbane, Logan and the northern Gold Coast.
The money raised will help fund Mater cancer research, patient services and vital equipment across Mater’s 13 Queensland hospitals, including the new Mater Private Hospital Gold Coast at Southport.
Mater Foundation Chief Executive Andrew Thomas praised the thousands of riders and volunteers who helped turn the event into a powerful show of community spirit.
“The support of Queensland’s cycling community has been incredible,” Mr Thomas said.
“Everyone at Mater, and especially our patients, is grateful to the 3600 riders who got on their bikes to fight cancer.
“This ride is about one great team of people, our riders, supporting teams in the frontline of the fight against cancer.”
