Hundreds of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes in the middle of the night following a high-rise unit fire.

The blaze erupted on the balcony of a unit on the corner of Marine Parade and Nind Street at around 12.30am.

Two occupants in one of the apartments were treated at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries.

Heavy smoke billowed from the unit and also impacted the unit above, with firefighters managing to get the inferno extinguished by about 1.15am.

Around 150 residents were able to begin returning to their homes from 2.15am.

Fire investigators will head to the scene today to try and determine what sparked it, but police are treating it as non-suspicious.
