LATEST @ 1PM | A woman has been charged with murder following the death of a young girl in Ipswich.
The four-year-old was found unresponsive at a home in Lowood around 11pm on Monday and could not be revived.
Following investigations into the child’s death, police today charged a 31-year-old woman with one count of murder domestic violence against a child.
The woman, who police confirmed is the girl’s mother, is due to appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court this afternoon.
Police confirmed two other children were inside the property at the time but were not injured.
“The remaining two children are in the care of family members, and their wellbeing remains a priority for all involved,” Detective Inspector Michael Manago said.
Detectives have not revealed how the little girl died, despite reports of a drowning.
“A postmortem examination will be conducted in the near future to establish greater clarity around how the child died,” Detective Insp Manago said.
“This is an incredibly tragic situation, even more tragic given the presence of the other young children in the dwelling at the time.
“Our thoughts are with the child’s family and everyone else that has been affected by this incident”.
Police Minister Dan Purdie said he was heartbroken by the news.
“It’s horrific,” he told reporters on Tuesday.
“It’s tragic for the family, it’s tragic for the community, it’s tragic for the frontline police and emergency services that went there.”
Police are continuing to urge anyone who may have relevant information to come forward as investigations continue.
EARLIER @ 6.45 AM | A major homicide investigation is underway after a child was found dead at a home in Ipswich.
Emergency crews made the grim find after being called to a property in Lowood around 11pm on Monday.
“A child was located unresponsive and declared deceased at the scene,” Queensland Police said in a statement.
A crime scene was declared and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death are now underway.
Police have confirmed a 31-year-old woman is currently assisting officers with inquiries.
“The woman and the child were known to each other however we are unable to comment further on their relationship at this stage,” police siad.
There is no ongoing threat to the community.
