A Gold Coast worker has been threatened at knifepoint while leaving one of the city’s biggest shopping centres.

The 19-year-old man was leaving a business on Town Centre Drive in Helensvale around 10.15pm on Thursday when he was approached by a man who pulled out a knife and started making demands.

The worker managed to get away unscathed and into his car where he called police for help.

Officers quickly identified the alleged offender and he was arrested nearby a short time later.

A 21-year-old Biggera Waters man has since been charged with one count each of going armed so as to cause fear, possession of a knife in a public place and possessing dangerous drugs.

He was refused police bail and was due to appear at Southport Magistrates Court today.
