Gold Coast commuters are none the wiser about when Light Rail Stage 3 will open, despite ads appearing with a supposed start date.
Ads popped up online this morning announcing people could finally start catching trams to Burleigh from this Sunday.
That’s despite no official announcement from the state government yet.
However, the ads were quickly taken down after G:Link was contacted by Hot Tomato.
A spokesperson for G:Link told us the ads may have jumped the gun, and we would need to wait for an official announcement from the state government.
That was expected to happen last weekend, but never eventuated.
It has blamed human error at another media organisation for the premature ads.
Ads promoting an August 2 start date for Light Rail Stage 3 appeared online before being quickly taken down
A spokesperson for Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg has since confirmed Stage 3 will not be opening on Sunday at this stage.
They told us the start date will be announced once the delivery team has completed testing and advises the government it is ready to take passengers.
A worker taking part in the testing process for Stage 3 had told us the delay was because they were having trouble getting trams between Broadbeach South and Burleigh to run to timetable.
However, this has not been confirmed.
The delay in the opening will be a blow for many Burleigh businesses who have already been promoting tram “parties” and promotions for this weekend.
