Burleigh Heads locals have secured a temporary win, with the closure of the Burleigh Heads Library delayed.
Gold Coast City Council has confirmed the branch, which was due to close today, will remain open until refurbishment works at the nearby Burleigh Waters Library are complete.
Council says library services will only relocate once the upgraded Burleigh Waters facility is ready to welcome back members.
The update comes after weeks of community backlash over plans to permanently close the Burleigh Heads library and transform the building into an arts and creative hub.
Hundreds of locals have rallied outside the library, while a petition calling on council to reverse its decision has attracted thousands of signatures.
The decision to close the library was made as part of this year’s council budget, with the City citing low patronage and a number of recent aggressive incidents involving community members as factors in the move.
