Gold Coast motorists could be given more relief at the bowser as petrol prices soar again, with the federal government reportedly considering resuming cuts to the fuel excise.
It comes amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, with no end in sight to the conflict.
Experts fear the cost of unleaded could soon hit $2.60 a litre, while the price for diesel could soar to $3.27 a litre.
The highest price for unleaded on the Gold Coast at the moment is $2.19 a litre, while diesel is selling for as much as $2.74 a litre.
The government initially slashed the fuel excise by 32 cents a litre in April, before extending that in July at a reduced rate of 16 cents a litre.
It was discontinued at the beginning of August.
The concerns about rising petrol prices come as a new front emerges in the Middle East war, with Iran-backed Houthi rebels launching attacks on Saudi Arabia and capturing key targets in the Red Sea, a critical alternative shipping route to the Strait of Hormuz.
