A man has been ordered to front court after allegedly trying to ram through barriers on a closed Surfers Paradise street, injuring two people.

A Toyota Hilux was allegedly being driven dangerously on the Esplanade just before 9pm on Friday, before slamming into the barrier near Staghorn Avenue.

The road has been shut for the GC500.

A pedestrian was initially trapped under the vehicle, while it’s understood a second person was hit by the falling barrier.

Both were taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Members of the public tried to restrain the driver of the Hilux, but he fled on foot.

The man was located a short time later by the dog squad in a nearby garden bed.

The man sustained a bite from a police dog during his arrest and was taken to hospital for further assessment before being discharged.

The 31-year-old Surfers Paradise man has been served a notice to appear on charges of dangerous driving, failing to provide a blood specimen, and failing to fulfil duties after a traffic crash.

He is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on November 13.
