Just when you thought the mid-1990s fashion revival had reached its absolute peak, Prime Video has decided to take us all the way back to 1995. The streaming platform has officially released the trailer and key art for Elle, the highly anticipated prequel series to the cultural phenomenon Legally Blonde.
For anyone who has ever wondered how a young woman from California ends up changing the entire culture of Harvard Law School with a bottle of hair dye and a flawless understanding of manual transmission, this series is looking to answer those questions. The eight-episode first season is locked in to premiere on July 1, streaming exclusively on Prime Video across more than 240 countries and territories.
Clearly, confidence in the project is already sky-high. In an era where television streaming networks are notoriously ruthless with renewals, Prime Video has already greenlit a second season before the public has even seen a single full episode.
Before the Courtroom: High School in the Nineties
The prequel shifts the timeline back to 1995, dropping audiences into the chaotic, pre-digital environment of high school. Long before she became a law savant, Elle Woods was a teenager navigating the classic trials of the era: complex high school friendships, forbidden teenage romance, and the kind of unique fashion experiments that defined the decade.
According to the official synopsis, the series focuses heavily on Elle’s formative years, showing how her experiences shaped the signature optimism and determination she displays in the original films. It also places a heavy emphasis on her family life, charting a deep, foundational bond between Elle and her mother, Eva.
Newcomer Lexi Minetree is stepping into some extraordinarily large, pink, high-heeled shoes to portray the teenage Elle, a role made iconic 25 years ago by Reese Witherspoon. Witherspoon herself is heavily involved behind the scenes, serving as an executive producer via her Hello Sunshine production house alongside Amazon MGM Studios.
The series was created by Laura Kittrell (High School, Insecure), who serves as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Caroline Dries. The opening two episodes were directed by Jason Moore, the filmmaker behind the original Pitch Perfect movie, suggesting the series will lean heavily into sharp, snappy comedic timing.

Star-Studded Cast and a Sydney Bound Tour
Minetree is joined by a massive ensemble cast. June Diane Raphael takes on the role of Elle’s mother, Eva, while Tom Everett Scott plays her father, Wyatt. The wider cast features Chandler Kinney, Jacob Moskovitz, and Gabrielle Policano, alongside an eclectic recurring line-up that includes nineties television staples like the late James Van Der Beek, plus David Burtka and Matt Oberg.
For local fans, the best piece of news is that the promotional tour is heading down under. Prime Video has confirmed that Lexi Minetree will visit Australia this July as the final stop on her global press tour.
The Sydney visit will pull double duty, celebrating the launch of the series while simultaneously marking the 25-year milestone legacy of the original Legally Blonde film franchise. Prime Video will be hosting a special launch party in Sydney with Minetree in attendance, allowing Australian fans and media a chance to experience the world of the show firsthand.
Meanwhile, across the globe, the release will be marked by “Elle World,” a massive, free, one-day experiential event in New York City on July 1, complete with themed activations and exclusive merchandise.
Whether you are a die-hard fan of the original 2001 film or simply nostalgic for the era of landline phones and butterfly clips, Elle looks set to be the mid-year binge-watch of choice. All eight episodes land on Prime Video on July 1.
