Residents of an apartment block in Coolangatta have had a shock wake-up call after an early morning fire erupted.

A blaze ripped through a unit on the sixth floor of a complex along Eden Avenue around 12.30am Wednesday, forcing the whole block to evacuate.

Four fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the flames and stop it from spreading.

Nine people, including children, were assessed at the scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

Thankfully none had to be taken to hospital for further treatment.

It’s not yet known what sparked the inferno with investigations ongoing.
