A frantic search is underway on the northern Gold Coast after a boatie was reported missing.

Residents near the Boykambil Esplanade Boat Ramp in Hope Island called police around 7pm on Sunday night after hearing a man desperately calling for help.

Emergency services were quick to respond but could only find an abandoned tinnie in Coombabah Creek.

It’s understood a 55-year-old man was using the vessel to travel between the shore and his house boat when he ran into trouble in the windy conditions.

A search and rescue operation last night failed to locate the man and was abandoned until first light this morning, with police divers also expected to join the efforts.
