An historic night beckons for the southern Gold Coast, with the first tram set to travel all the way to Burleigh Heads for the first time.

The trip from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads marks a major milestone for the $1.549 billion Stage 3 project.

However, there will be no passengers on board just yet, with finishing works set to continue for the next few months before it’s all systems go.

GoldlinQ said tonight’s testing is “designed to ensure all parts of the new system are safe, reliable, and ready”.

“A lot of work has been undertaken in the past more than four years to get to this point,” GoldlinQ CEO Phil Mumford said.

“We are excited to get started on the testing and commissioning phase.”

Residents are being urged to steer clear of the tracks, with the testing coinciding with the energisation of overhead wires.

The wires carry 750 volts of electricity which is enough to cause fatal injury if touched.

“It is important for pedestrians, motorists, cyclists and users of public transport systems to be aware the corridor has changed,” Mr Mumford said.

“Take care, do not enter restricted areas and always obey warning signs”.

Stations will remain closed during testing and commissioning, and trams will not be available to passengers”.
