A man has been charged after allegedly pointing a laser at a Polair aircraft on the Gold Coast.

Polair was conducting airborne patrols of the northern Gold Coast on the night of February 14 when they were targeted by a high-powered laser.

They were able to track the source of the last to an address in Ormeau and a 38-year-old man was taken into custody. A laser was also found at the property.

The man, from the Gladstone region, has been charged with threatening the safety of an aircraft or of persons on board an aircraft and possessing/acquiring restricted items.

He is due to appear in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on 24 February.

“Police would like to remind the public that shining a laser at an aircraft or into the cockpit is a federal crime which will be taken seriously and rigorously investigated,” the Queensland Police Service said in a statement.

“In the past, convicted offenders have received fines as high as $10,000, and the offence carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment.”
