A motorcyclist has died after plunging 10 metres down an embankment in the Gold Coast hinterland.

Emergency crews were called to Wongawallan around 8.30pm on Monday following reports a motorcycle had collided with a guard rail along Tamborine Oxenford Road.

Upon arrival, they found the motorbike had then crashed several metres down an embankment.

The male rider was treated at the scene for life-threatening injuries but sadly could not be revived.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
