One of the Gold Coast’s favourite natural escapes could soon see major changes under a new proposal designed to enhance its eco-tourism appeal.
The Gold Coast Waterways Authority has released a draft feasibility study on Wave Break Island and is calling on the community to have their say on the future of the popular spot.
The study, backed by Queensland Government funding through the Spit Works Program, explores how Wave Break Island could evolve in line with the long-term vision of The Spit Master Plan.
Key ideas put forward include enlarging the keyhole and nourishing the western beach to boost vessel anchorage capacity by up to 50 per cent, as well as dredging a new western channel to improve vessel access.
Environmental improvements have also been flagged, with staged vegetation enhancements and weed management proposed to strengthen the island’s biodiversity.
For visitors, the north-eastern precinct could be activated with new features such as a pontoon, eco-cabins and even an underwater snorkelling attraction.
The Gold Coast Waterways Authority says the feedback process will help shape the future of Wave Break Island as a “family-friendly eco-tourism hub” while protecting the island’s natural charm.
