UPDATE @ 3.00PM | The storm threat on the Gold Coast is far from over with a fresh warning issued for a dangerous cell heading quickly towards the city.

Another dangerous storm has developed over the Hinterland and is moving east.

The Bureau is forecasting this storm to impact areas including Southport, Coomera and Hope Island by 3:15 pm and South Stradbroke Island and waters off South Stradbroke Island by 3:45 pm.

Damaging winds and large hailstones are likely.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

EARLIER | Parts of the Gold Coast have been smashed by severe storms which swept quickly across the city.

A warning was issued  by the Bureau at around 1pm today for a “very dangerous” storm bringing damaging winds and “giant hailstones”.

Areas including Ashmore, Carrara, Southport and Bundall have been hammered by hail.

The storm also dumped a fair bit of rain before quickly moving away from the coast.

Earlier, the Bureau issued a warning with the thunderstorm detected on the weather radar near Mudgeeraba, Nerang and Miami and moving northeast.

This warning was cancelled at around 1.30pm.
