The Gold Coast is in for a wet and wild day with rain and severe storms forecast for the city.

A severe thunderstorm warning has already been issued for the Scenic Rim, with a dangerous weather system currently making its way over the region.

“The Bureau of Meteorology warns that at 6:10am, a severe thunderstorm likely to produce damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding was detected near Beaudesert and the area between Boonah and Beaudesert,” the Bureau of Meteorology said.

“This thunderstorm is moving towards the south. It is forecast to affect Rathdowney, Border Ranges National Park and Laravale by 6:40am”.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Southeast Coast districts.

“A surface trough with an associated upper low is triggering severe thunderstorms over southern and parts of the state,” BOM said.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.

“Locations which may be affected include Boonah and Beaudesert.”

While the Gold Coast is yet to be included in the storm warning, the city is being warned severe storms today are likely.

“The chance of a thunderstorm during the morning and afternoon, possibly severe with damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding,” the weather bureau said.

Up to 45 millimetres of rain has been forecast to fall.
