An empty fuel tank has reportedly brought a car thief undone after a stolen vehicle ran out of fuel in the heart of Surfers Paradise.

Police were called to Cavill Avenue around 10.45pm on Wednesday, where they found a black Ford Ranger blocking the tram tracks.

Witnesses told officers they saw a man walking away from the vehicle.

He was tracked down a short distance away and taken into custody.

Police will allege the vehicle was stolen from a home in Loganholme around 7.20pm on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old Pimpama man has since been charged with enter dwelling and commit, and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

He spent the night behind bars and is due to front Southport Magistrates Court today.
