The Premier is expected to unveil plans to build a new multibillion-dollar desalination plant for the South East today.

It’s understood State Cabinet on Monday endorsed for the plant to be built north of Brisbane, at a rumoured price tag of $8 billion.

It’s all part of a 30-year-old water strategy plan for the South East, to help secure the region’s water supply for the future.

However, there are fears the move could mean an additional cost to residents, with a possible 15 percent increase to water bills to cover the price of building it.

As part of the plan, the Government is also reportedly looking at ways to better use the state’s existing water infrastructure, with the desalination plant on the Gold Coast believed to be largely under-utilised.

More details are expected to be revealed later this morning.
