Hope is on the horizon for thousands of people battling Motor Neurone Disease following a groundbreaking breakthrough by Queensland researchers.

Scientists at the University of Queensland have unveiled a promising new drug known as R8Y, which experts believe could ultimately transform the devastating, incurable disease into a manageable, long-term illness.

The development marks a monumental milestone for the FightMND foundation, whose significant funding is being credited for the progress.

The drug is being added to the legacy of the late AFL legend and MND champion Neale Daniher, who dedicated his final years to funding a cure for “The Beast”.

Human trials for R8Y are gaining momentum, with researchers optimistic that clinical testing could begin within the next five years.

The medical triumph comes as the NRL prepares to launch “Jai July” tonight.

The month-long fundraising initiative was established following the devastating MND diagnosis and retirement of 30-year-old rugby league star Jai Arrow.

To kick off the campaign, every single try scored during Friday night’s blockbusters will trigger a $1,000 donation to support Arrow and his family.

The fundraising frenzy officially begins at CommBank Stadium, where Arrow’s most recent club, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, face off against the Panthers.
