A fire has torn through Burleigh Heads National Park, with the blaze being treated as suspicious.

Fire crews were called to the headland at around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday after a large fire and smoke billowing from the area were seen.

The blaze shocked locals who had gathered at nearby vantage points to get a glimpse of the fire.

Five fire crews attended the scene, with Queensland Fire Department confirming they monitored the blaze before it self-extinguished around 11.20pm.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is now underway, with Police confirming the blaze is being treated as suspicious.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with relevant footage to contact them.

The walking track around Burleigh Headland remained closed on Wednesday morning.

Burleigh MP Hermann Vorster described the incident as “heartbreaking”.

“At the moment we do have reports or suggestions this fire has been deliberately lit, and my message to the culprits is come forward now,” Vorster said.

“You’ve had a major impact on the community. There has to be some consequences.”

More to come.
