A young man has been charged after police allegedly uncovered a number of guns in his vehicle during a traffic stop on the M1.

Police made the shock find around 7.45pm on Saturday after being called to reports of an Audi A4 stopped on the off-ramp at Mudgeeraba with another vehicle.

While speaking to the driver of the Audi, officers allegedly found a firearm in the footwell.

A second firearm was also found during further searches of the vehicle.

A 21-year-old Currumbin Waters man has since been charged with possessing shortened firearms, possessing dangerous drugs, authority required to possess explosives, and offence to buy or possess S4 or S8 medicines or hazardous poisons.

He was refused police bail to appear in Southport Magistrates Court today.
